Like any other animal, chickens need enrichment to live a healthy and happy life. For most backyard chicken keepers, that means coming up with creative ways to keep their flock entertained. In a perfect world, your chickens would be able to forage endless acres of land to keep themselves entertained – But you and I both know there are limitations to keeping backyard chickens (mainly predator risks). When backyard chickens are confined to their coop and run they can get bored. Boredom can lead to some pretty nasty behaviors such as bullying, feather picking, and egg eating. So unless you are lucky enough to have a completely free ranging flock and a lot of land, I will talk about some products that may help deter boredom.
As you all know I am a huge fan of Omlet and have always thought their chicken keeping products are top notch – So I was ecstatic when they asked me to collaborate with them and test out some products in exchange for some unbiased reviews. Our chickens happily obliged to being product testers and have picked these 3 products as their favorites:
The Pendant Peck Toy
The pendant peck toy was a clear winner. I don’t know of any chicken that is not food motivated. Fill this baby up with their favorite treat mix or scratch grains and watch them happily peck away! The swinging pendant also seems to mesmerize them and holds their attention while also providing a tasty snack. I only wish it came in a larger size as our large flock of 50 birds emptied this toy in less than an hour. So it will require frequent refills if you have a large flock, but I think it would provide hours of entertainment for a smaller flock.
The Caddi Chicken Treat Holder
It’s no surprise that the runner up product is also a food dispensing toy (Though not as popular as the pendant peck toy – But I wouldn’t choose salad as my first choice either). The caddi chicken treat holder is the best way to feed fresh veggies to your backyard flock. We are frequently giving garden scraps to our flock, but they love to trample their veggies and leafy greens into the dirt. This treat holder keeps the food off the ground and makes it so your chickens have to work for it! No more food waste and it keeps our run much cleaner.
The Omlet Chicken Perch
I know, I know. It seems silly that something as simple as a chicken perch made it into our top 3, but hear me out. What makes this perch different from your average DIY perch (And trust me, I am all about the DIY projects) is the adjustable bracket design. It can be mounted to any material at any angle. Seriously. Mount it to wood, chicken wire, steel mesh, you name it! Our chicken run is made of chain-link fencing and it was installed so easily. I opted to test the 6 ft perch (rather than the 3 ft perch) because I wanted to test the durability of the wood to see if it would bend under the weight of multiple birds. To my astonishment the wood didn’t even bow in the slightest. And of course the chickens were delighted to have another perch in their run. As I always say – If you build it, they will sit on it.
